Human shampoo should never be used other than a mild baby shampoo can be used but not every time. Human shampoo contains sulfates that strip the oil from the hair follicle. Some dog shampoo contains sulfates and can cause skin irritation and dry skin. Dog shampoos that do contain sulfates contain much lower quantities than human shampoo.

Dogs with curly or long hair should be combed daily. Double coated breeds need that undercoat combed out as warmer weather starts. If not they will shed all over the place. Brush all dogs out before a bath making sure to get all tangles out. Sticky items such as pine sap, tar or paint can be removed using a little petroleum jelly or a little Dawn detergent. If a tangle cannot be removed by the methods above then trimming out the hair may be the only thing to do. Do not clip too close or you risk nipping your dog’s skin.

Like all dog products there are a lot out in the market place. Some dog shampoos have conditioner in them. Others are especially made for different color coats to bring out the shine, like black or red. Some contain moisturizers for dry skin problems. Other dog shampoos are medicated for dermatitis or flaky skin and can be prescribed by your veterinarian. If your dog has a water aversion you can use a waterless shampoo. In addition there are specialty dog shampoos that are for fleas or skunk odor removal.

You should research and know what type of coat your dog has. This will help you pick the right shampoo for your dog. Use enough dog shampoo to lather, thoroughly rinsing all of the shampoo off the dog after bathing. Keep water and soap out of your dog’s eyes and ears. Do not use shampoos with sulfates and be careful with flea dog shampoos as they contain insect repellents which can cause allergic reactions in some. Comb or brush your dog often, bathing when necessary and use a good dog shampoo. Your dog’s coat will look great, smell good and be free of any skin problems.
